How to use the script
Step 1 - downloading the script
Download mozsunjava.sh (if you haven't already), and save it to your 'home' directory.
Note: If you have downloaded the JRE, this should also be in your home directory.
Step 2 - running mozsunjava.sh
- Open up a terminal window and it should automatically open at your home directory.
- You'll need to be root in order to install Java, so first type:
su
...then enter the root password.
- Next, to enable the script to run, type:
chmod 740 mozsunjava.sh
- Next, if you're using Mozilla, type:
sh mozsunjava.sh
If you're using Firefox, type:
sh mozsunjava.sh firefox
(note: lowercase 'f' in firefox)
...then press Enter to run the script.
Step 3 - the installation
You should just be able to follow the on-screen instructions, but for those who like to know exactly what's going on:
- You're informed that if you want to quit at any point, just hold down the 'CTRL' key on your keyboard and press 'C'.
... If the script detects that you already have a JRE
installed, it will offer you the option of:
1 : deleting the exisitng JRE and installing a new one
2 : using the existing JRE
3 : exiting the install
Just type the number of the option you require, then press Enter.
- The script searches for the Mozilla/Firefox directory.
... If you have more than one, they will be listed in order, just type the
number of the directory you want to enable Java with, then press Enter.
- The installation will then be initiated. First of all it requires that you accept Sun's license agreement.
...At this stage press the space bar to scroll down the page (you'll need
to do this a few times), type "yes" when prompted and press Enter to
continue.
- Text should fly up the screen, revealing the JRE unpacking all
necessary components. After this has finnished, all being well, you
should see reports that the installation was ok, and that
Mozilla/Firefox is now Java enabled.
Note: If anything goes wrong at any point, a red negative response should appear which should explain the problem.
